Some of the Social Reforms of Raja Ram Mohan Roy?

  1. He was opposed to Sati, polygamy, child marriage (Gouridaan), idolatry, the caste system, infanticide, illiteracy and propagated widow remarriage.
  2. His efforts led to the abolition of Sati in 1829 by Lord William Bentinck, the then Governor-General of India.
  3. He advocated the liberty of Women. He was determined to give women her proper place in the society. He was the advocate of women education. He advocated the right of Hindu women over the property.
  4. He stressed on rationalism and modern scientific approach. He established English school in 1816 and Vedanta College in 1825. He wanted to introduce Western scientific education in English
  5. He believed in social equality of all human beings.
  6. He argued that ancient Hindu texts the Vedas and the Upanishads upheld the doctrine of monotheism. To prove his point, he translated the Vedas and five Upanishads into Bengali.
